  • Setup for color monitor?

Posted by Kevin Carlson on July 14, 2022 at 10:06 pm

I had to change computers so my AJA TTap thunderbolt 2 to SDI box won’t work with my thunderbolt 3 computer. Thank you Apple.

Now I have a BMD Ultastudio Monitor 3G that feeds my Flanders monitor.

The monitor is getting a 2K signal since I edit in 4k and that’s the highest it can receive. But the problem is it is slightly letter boxing the picture and thus compressing it vertically.

Is there a way to force PP or BM Desktop Video Setup to send a 1080P signal?

There is a setting where you can scale the output signal either up or down in the playback settings in Premiere.

    Thanks for the response, Tero,

I assume you mean Preferences/Playback/Setup on the BM device?

Yes, I am scaling down, but I think it is scaling down to the 2K signal and the wrong aspect ratio, which is compressing the image and letterboxing it.

Is that what you’re talking about?

If that doesn’t work you’ll need to work in a timeline that has a supported resolution/framerate that the I/O device can output and what the monitor supports. Resolve is nicer in this regard because you can have a separate monitoring resolution from the timeline.

I think you are right, Tero. At least that’s what it’s looking like.

I wish I could still use my AJA box, as it allowed you to decide what output it sent. Thanks for forcing me to “upgrade” Apple 🙁

That’s really good to know about Resolve! I had not heard that. I may have to finally give it a try…

Not an answer for you but…

    1.) A thunderbolt 2 to 3 adaptor won’t work with the TTap?

2.) Are you editing 4K or actually UHD?

Actually, AJA has been pretty helpful, and looks like there actually might be a chance that I could use an adapter. But my understanding is that Apple tries very hard to make nothing T2 work on a T3 computer, and with OS updates blocks drivers and such. I’ve tried using it, and the TTap shows up in system report, but it won’t be seen as a capture device. Thanks for the response, Mark Grance.
