  • Settings for mini DV (not HD) sequence and exporting

Posted by Zuleide Otaviana on May 6, 2011 at 7:37 pm

I imported footage from a regular mini DV to my sequence, and everything looks great. But when I export to quicktime the resolution drops quite a bit. Need to know what is the best way to create a quicktime or to export the project. It is a 40 minutes video. I also wonder if I may have the correct setting for the sequence. This is not HD. Thanks for any help.

    Sequence settings:
Frame Size NTSC DV (3:2) or NTSC (4:3)? I am using the (4:3).
Pixel Aspect Ratio… using NTSC CCIR 601 / DV (720×480)… is that right?
Compressor – DVD DVNCPRO -NTCS or Apple pro res 422???
And video procession, YUV or RGB???

    Thanks.

If you sequence is correct and is DV. Then export “Current Settings”
Make self-contained if the clip is leaving the machine.

What is the best compressor to use? Should I leave it at DV/DVCPRO NTSC? Should I use other compressor setting?

That depends on what you are delivery to?

Almost ALWAYS, there are better options then DV NTSC codec on your videos.

Even if you bring in DV footage via FW, You can change your sequence settings to what ever codec suits your needs.

Do you have to deliver a DV CODEC clip? Leave it as is.

If you have anything in your sequence besides video, ie: grfx, effects, layering, outside animation, etc.. it’s better to change.

    1. bring in DV footage via FW
    2. Edit till done.
    3. Change Sequence settings to DV50 or 8bit uncompressed.
    4. Re- Render, full render the sequence.
    5. Export sequence using “Current Settings”, a ref file is fine and saves space if you are not leaving the edit machine with the clip. Other wise make it “Self-Contained”.

    6. Drop exported file into your compression program to create your deliver file(s), ie: DVD files, Web Files, ect.

Why don’t you just use the Sequence preset for DV??

Sequence settings > Load Sequence Preset…> Select: DV NTSC 48Khz

That’s all you need. Don’t need to change anything else.

As to exporting… That depends on what your final delivery is. Is this for the Web? For DVD? etc.
If it’s for the web, I just go for H.264. If you want the best quality then just stay with the DV codec and Export sequence using current settings.
