Howdy y’all! Some of you might know already I’m testing out Premiere Pro as a replacement for our shop as we move away from FCP. I’m keeping a video blog series as we test stuff. Tonight I did a quick video showing how to set up the AJA Kona boards for use with Premiere Pro for folks like me who might be transitioning over.

Hope it’s helpful for some of you and I know I’ll be asking a LOT of questions on this forum soon. 🙂

Thanks a lot Walter, it seems to work great. Blackmagic Decklink too.

One question though. To play out via AJA or BMD it’s necessary to choose a AJA or BMD sequence preset. No matter which settings I use, material on the timeline needs rendering (red bar). Uncompressed 8 bit FCP exports in an uncompressed 8 bit sequence play just fine, but PP still show the red bar. It seems that using AJA or BMD hardware degrades the Mercury playback. Am I missing something?

In my case the red bar does not always mean rendering. The clips play fine.

In that demo I’m running an 8 Core MacPro with about 16 or 20GB of RAM, the ATI card and a fast SAN. All of that comes into play when you’re talking about realtime just like with Final Cut Pro.

Yeah, we’ve have similar setups here. Only a NVidia cards, so yay for Mercury. The video’s play fine on both the canvas and the reference monitor. It’s just the red bar then. The idea that PP wants to render when it’s not really necessary still bothers me though. But thanks.

One thing to add to Walter Biscardi’s excellent startup tutorial for all those Kona owners thinking of migrating from FCP to Premiere. This tripped me up for quite a while… there’s a little symbol under the source and programme windows of three interlocking circles – it’s called ‘output’. When you select it drops down a menu that allows you to control playback resolution – by default on both my newly installed Premiere 5.5 systems this is set to HALF – and in this mode the Kona output does not work properly – it’s essential to change this to FULL. Caught me out for the best part of the morning wondering why I couldn’t get any video out through the Kona.

    Best,

    Ken.
