I am trying to find an easier solution than precomposing for this particular task.

I have three video clips I am cutting together. I want to have the same soft circular mask for each clip. I know there are several ways to do this (track matte, precomposing, copy/paste matte) but I would like to have the ability to use one mask layer for any number of video clips.

I created a soft white circle using a solid and mask. I added the Set Matte effects to my video clip. Within that effect I selected the solid w/ mask. I cannot get the Set Matte effect to combine the soft circle with my video clip to create the softly circled video. Is this possible???

    Thanks in advance,
    Ian.

After effects looks at the layer before masks/effects, with the set matte effect, so precomp the solid with feather and “Move all attributes into new composition”.
