Sennheiser AVX ME2 strange problem
Hello,
I just purchased a used Sennheiser AVX ME2 wireless lav system. I’m encountering a strange problem, in which the supplied ME2 microphone produces a strange electronic sounding hum.
It goes away if I touch certain metal components (the screw lock for example) whilst touching the microphone head, and so far the only way to fix it for long periods of time is by physically pulling the fixed windshield of the microphone upwards which stops the hum entirely, but then after around an hour it comes back again.
Does anyone have any solution or knowledge as to what’s happening here? The hum seems to be directly affected by nearby electronics, as when I switch lights on or off the hum changes and when outside it’s reduced but still very apparent. When using my other microphone (Sennheiser ME66) into the wireless transmitter, there are no problems at all.

Hello Aaron and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.
Sounds like your lav has a broken ground wire. At least where it connects to the lav head grille and maybe somewhere else.

That’s the classic pattern for a grounding issue.
Sennheiser is a large company with plenty of service capability if you want to investigate “factory service” and in addition, since they are part of a large working group with Neumann and others, nearly every truly professional shop that specializes in broadcast gear typically has a repair staff that is qualified to work on this type of gear.
If the rig is “mission critical” and you can’t do without it – you can also just order a replacement lav – send the broken one in – and when the repaired unit comes back, either sell it or keep it as a spare.
I keep four lavs for two AVX rigs just in case something goes wrong at a shoot. Spares can often save a shoot!
