  • Sending Feedback for 720p Uncompressed Captures (cross post)

Ok, so we’re up to Version 5.0.3 of Final Cut Pro and Apple still has not addressed the issue of 720p uncompressed Captures. I send feedback on this all the time and if anyone would like to join me on sending feedback to Apple, I’ve gone ahead and prepared an easy copy and paste form for y’all. I plan to send this form several times a day from now until the thing gets fixed.

    Start by going here:
    https://www.apple.com/support/finalcutpro/

Now in the lower right side of the page, click the Send Feedback link.

And then feel free to copy and paste from below. Thanks for hopefully helping to get Apple’s attention on this thing. I figure with enough feedback forms maybe someone will finally notice the issue.

    Subject: 720p Uncompressed Capture

    Feedback Type: Bug Report

    Comments:
Any Batch Capture or Clip Capture of 720p material using either 8 or 10bit uncompressed will result in a false subclip in the Browser. This subclip must be trashed from the Browser and the correct clip imported from the harddrive.

This not only affects initial captures, but also reconnecting media during a re-capture. If the media goes off-line and needs to be re-captured, FCP will not reconnect the media correctly. The editor will need to manually re-insert each and every clip for an entire project.

This issue has been present since FCP 5.0 was released and needs to be corrected ASAP. This problem did not exist in FCP 4.

    Walter,
I’ve several editors I know call me and ask me about this problem SPECIFICALLY!!! They start off by saying “All my clips I’m capturing are coming in a subclips at twice the length. What’s up?” My first question to them is always “Are you capturing 720P via HDSDI” The answer is always yes. No body can believe it’s a major bug like that that has remained for so long. I always tell them the same thing you just posted, Use the Feedback feature in FCP and let Apple know. They had to have received hundreds of complaints about this by now.
As users, all we can do is keep posting to the feedback page and making noise on forums like this. Boy, the MLB Playoffs on Fox really got screwed by this bug. Not a good situation I heard.

Hi Walter . I feel it was Avid’s lack of responsiveness that opened the door to FCP in the first place. If Apple want’s to attract and keep the professional community … it has to strive to make it’s software as “bug free and reliable” as possible. For most of us …. bug free and reliable is a helluva lot more important that “new features”.

Now that’s the kind of thing that has to be reported directly back to Apple. It seems the reality TV crowd has Apple’s ear since they keep trying to fix the Multi-Cam feature. Just keep sending feedback and maybe it will be fixed.

Yes this is an incredibly ugly situation that really goes beyond bug. I have no earthly idea how something this bad could be included in the release software in the first place, and then to go this long without addressing is it getting to the point of irresponsible.

That and the ridiculous costs of upgrading to SD and then HD. But yes, something as bad as this bug should never have gotten past the beta phase of FCP 5. I really hope we don’t have to wait until FCP 6 for this to be fixed or I may have to consider the “A” software for 720p HD work.
