Is there a relatively practical way in Sony Vegas to pixellate or blur a small portion of the image, such as a face or license plate, or does this have to be done with third-party software (and presumably another generation of the video)? I don’t currently have a need for this but I’m wondering if there’s a manageable way to do it in Vegas itself, maybe with some sort of moving FX overlay or something.

Yea, duplicate the track. Add a blur or pixelate to the top track you just duplicated. Then add a Cookie Cutter with the “cut away all but selection” to just affect the small portion that you want to cover. The lower track with no FX will show through all except the part of the top track that the cookie cutter is affecting.

NewBlueFx also has a Pixelator effect that can do the same thing and eliminates the need to use a second track. However, the cookie cutter approach also works well.

Actually, NewBlueFX has a LOT of FX that save tons of time in Vegas over doing them manually. One of my favorites is the reflection because that always takes several tracks and too much time to set up if you try and do it yourself.

I highly recommend looking at NewBlueFX for some time saving and cost effective FX (and also many that you can’t create yourself) 😉
