I am training on an Avid system with someone else’s pre-existing settings, so it may be an option that you can turn on or off, but the blue selection bar has one solid line, and another one to the right of that which is a dotted/dashed line. What’s the purpose for having two selecion lines? It seems to be a difference of a few frames or so, and is kind of annoying when i am using the CNTRL key to quickly snap to clips. It also makes using the EXTEND tool somewhat annoying because it doesn’t accurately snap to the clip (or in the case of the extend tool, it won’t extend at all due to the empty frames). Does this make sense? Any advice?

First I would recommend that you take 5 minutes and create an new user profile for yourself and setup you own settings. Then, in order to be able to use the extend function, set your timeline settings to snap to end of edit instead of beginning of edit so you can mark an outpoint for the extend to go to. I use extend too but I usually use the mark in-out and then delete the in point and then extend. Instead of extend, a lot of editors just lasso the edit and go into trim mode and drag the edit to the next edit (or wherever).
