select arrow changing to overwrite or splice in
why is my select arrow changing to overwrite or splice in when I want to use the select tool on my timeline? How do I stop this please.

Can be turned off in the Timeline Window on its toolbar at the far left – click on the existing Segment or Overwrite button and it will stop being highlighted and therefore, inactive. You’ll then be left with your cursor arrow when it is over a segment.
See also, in the Timeline Settings (in its Edit tab) that you can select/check ‘Clicking the TC Track or Ruler Disables Smart Tools’ and it will do a similar thing.
Worth having a read of the Media Composer Family Help as there are several options and you need to experiment a bit to see which combination suits your work style.
