Seinheisser G3 vs. Zoom H4n planted on talent

Lectrosonics are too expensive for my situation.

Seineisser G3 wireless transmitters into a Sound Devices 744T

vs.

planting Zoom H4Ns (or other small recorder) on the talent.

COS-11D lav in both cases.

Obviously won’t be able to monitor the Zoom live, but shoots are such that I can check audio with headphones after the take. Probably wouldn’t check every take, but it’s all for myself so a little more room for error than usual.

MAIN QUESTION: Since it is hard wired, would the Zoom have better sound quality than the wireless Seineisser G3 into a 744T?

Obviously checking the takes after is a pain/ risk if you don’t check it, but that aside, if I could spend half the money and get better sound quality, it would be worth it.

(2) Sennheiser MKH-416 connected to the Sound Devices 744T either way for boom.

Hi

To me, checking the zooms recordings after takes is totally un workable.
Either the takes are very short, say 20 secs each, in which case checking is feasible but there will be so many, it will become unworkable.
Or the takes are so long – say 20 mins each in which case you can check the take is there, but not all of every take. The problem area will be in the middle of a take and youll miss it.

If the level of this project is such that a zoom and checking scenario is a possibility, then just transmit the sound using a G3. The quality will be abosolutely fine. At least that way you can constantly monitor your recordings.

Peter has given you good advice here. One question. You state, “(2) Sennheiser MKH-416 connected to the Sound Devices 744T either way for boom.”

I’m not sure what you mean. Location and logistics depending, the Sennheiser 416 may yield better results, although I have had a lav win the day over a 416 due to the degree and direction of unwanted ambient noise.

Do you have a hyper like a Schoeps cmc641?

Hunter,

You’re switching topics a bit too quickly for me.

I don’t think you find any talent willing to wear a 744T.

You really need to re-think the idea on not monitoring your audio as it’s recorded. That’s Rule #1. If you don’t, your rear will be handed to you at some point.

I have used a Schoeps as a VO mic, but more typically it’s for dialog.
