I need to see a layer (video) through characters, with a black background. I mean, all black except the names, and inside these letters you can see some footage. These characters form names, but I need to use some effects in each letter, so I have to use one layer for each letter.
Which is the best way to do this?
    Thanks.

Each character on it’s own layer, then use each character as a track matte for the underlying video. Once this is done, you can simply parent all of the mattes (characters) and all of the fills (video layers) to a NULL object. This will make moving the names easier.

You could also skip the NUL parenting and precomp each name…I prefer the parenting method as it keeps all elements “live” in your comp…the obvious advantage to precomping is a cleaner final comp.
