  • Secret Prefs in AE 7?

Posted by Uwe Lansing on January 25, 2006 at 7:33 pm

    Hi,

with 6.5 sometimes I had a lot of problems with bigger projects => AE crashes a lot until I saw this posting
“To find the Secret Prefs, hold down shift when accessing AE’s prefs — keep the shift key down until you see the prefs dialog box. Try setting it to purge every 5 frames during Make Movie.”

Now, in AE 7 the same thing, but it seems there is no possibility to set “purge every 5 frames during Make Movie”. AE 7 crashes after a while during Render to an avi. Is there any solution now like the old one?

    regards
    Uwe

I can’t check right now, but I’m pretty sure that the secret preferences are still there. You keep shift down, go to the preferences, and in the preferences you have a dropdown menu for different prefs. In this dropdown you should find one that’s named ‘secret’.

I’ve also had a project that would be so incredibly RAM hungry that it would crash during rendering. I noticed that rendering with Caps-Lock active (which disables preview) it didn’t crash at all. You could give that a try…

You could try and hack the prefs file manually. look for this section:

    “Pref_PURGE_EVERY_N_FRAMES” = 0000

Oh yes, thank you Barend. I forgot holding down shift. The possibility with Caps-Lock active I

Why does AE have secret prefs at all? They seem pretty useful — and it seems pretty stupid to hide them.

This question was asked on the Media-Motion After Effects email list and was answered by an Adobe employee. I don’t think they’d mind me pasting the response here:

“Hold down Shift when bringing up the prefs via the menu command, and an
    extra “Secret” panel is available.

The “purge every N frames” option should slow down your renders, as all
caches are blown, but sometimes it is actually helpful. The reason it isn’t
an official feature is that we consider it a bug if using that option is
helping you. Please let us know via the bug report web form on Adobe.com:

We may need your specific project to reproduce the problem, so please
    provide real contact info.

    Thanks,

    So there you go.
