  • Second Windows Monitor – glitchy

Posted by Steve Roberts on September 4, 2011 at 11:37 pm

    Hi all,

I’ve just upgraded to Windows 7 64bit which runs nicely BUT when using my second monitor (VGA) as a vegas (10e – 64 bit) preview it glitches the video and audio but another BUT that when I view the same segment of video in the small video preview window it is perfectly smooth. It’s only when I hit the “Video Preview on External Monitor” that the video and audio glitch.

The project is a 720P PAL project. The project itself is just 10 AVI (Lagarith codec) files – no effects etc. Changing down from Best (Full) to Preview (Half) solves this but it doesn’t make sense. It should be the same in either the small video preview window or the External Monitor.

I’ve tried other video CODEC encoded files and they react the same way. So I’ve ruled out the codec.

I’ve tried toggling all the options within the video preview window without any noticable solution.

My only thought is that the video drivers could be buggy. I’m using a Nvidia 8400 GS which is only a basic 256M card which should be fine for video editing.

My new audio box is a RME Fireface 400 which have had problems with much earlier versions of Vegas.

    Any leads greatly appreciated.

I have had similar issues and have had to go to Microsoft Mapper for some audio issues to be resolved. Also, I have found that if I have glitchy video, sometimes I turn off the Auto adjustment for quality when using the 2nd monitor and it is less glitchy (as long as my quality is close to what it would choose on it’s own.) I am using a Presonus Firestudio and the latest drivers seems better, also, I have issues with Waves plug-ins as well….let me know how you make out!

    Thanks for the reply Scott,

The video runs 100% perfectly without the “Windows Second Display” but the second I hit the button it starts to glitch ???

One thing I did try based on your suggestions is I changed the audio over to the motherboards audio card and it worked much better.

I do have the latest drivers for the RME running. This may be a job for RME to sort out.

    Thanks,

    Steve R.

    Steve

What are your system specs in terms of CPU and RAM? Vegas preview relies heavily on the power of your CPU.

Is this a multi-cam edit by any chance?

My system specs: Intel i7 970, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 10e (x32/x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

    Hi Nigel,

Well the system had an update along with the Windows 7.

16G RAM, Core2 Quad Core Q9550, RAID data drive (motherboard based).

I had no problem doing this under Windows XP SP3 with 4G of RAM.

Windows media player has no problem playing these files off disc. In fact I know that I can play 720P uncompressed AVI files off it without a glitch ??

What has changed is the OS and the sound card. I updated the sound card as my old Lynx Audio card had no Windows 7 drivers.

As I said before it plays fine in the Video Preview window.

One thing that I have noticed is that when playing just a single track of 720P video in a 720P project it appears to need 41% of the computers power with all the cores at the same level ? No effects ? Stop the video and the CPU goes down to 0-1% ??? Maybe it’s the Lagarith CODEC ?

I’ll do a few checks on things like the CODEC.

    Cheers,

    Steve R.

Well I have to report that for some reason it now works fine.

I have my suspicions about the USB external drives on my machine. I have 3 of them which are usually on and the machine had some small issues in discovering them. Then I was accessing a large AVI from one of them which caused a BSOD.

Luckily I already have a plan to rid myself of these drives with a large RAID upgrade.

Conclusion: USB drivers were somehow interfering with the video / audio cards.

Hope this helps someone else sometime.

“Conclusion: USB drivers were somehow interfering with the video / audio cards.”

They weren’t interfering, they were competing for the I/O channel on the processor.

Nobody else picked up on it, but your second processor is VGA, so I suspect that the processor is doing extra work to downscale to the VGA monitor.

    Hi Stephen,

Interestingly the system has now gone back to it’s glitchy best !

I was wondering myself about the VGA output. My video card has an output for DVI and the other monitor is on a VGA output. Would I be better off getting something with 2 x DVI outputs ?

    Cheers,

I avoid mixing video cards if at all possible. You greatly increase the opportunity for driver conflicts. Cards with 2 DVI ports are fairly cheap. I would go that way. I also avoid ATI/Radeon products because I have historically had problems with their drivers. Besides, the plug-ins from BCC and New Blue use the cuda cores in the nVidia GPUs.

You might want to try using the Windows Classic Wave drivers with your RME card. I have a problem with Vegas Pro 10.0e 64-bit stuttering on my M-Audio Firewire 410 if I use the ASIO drivers and place certain plug-ins on the Master Audio Bus (like T-Racks Meters) but the stuttering goes away as soon as I switch to the Classic Wave Drivers. Just something to check and see if it’s a good workaround and still use the RME card.
