  • SDX900 card and lens for HDX900?

Posted by Litzwire on August 3, 2006 at 7:18 pm

Sorry this is a bit off topic from Varicam.

Does anyone know if, since the HDX900 is supposedly an SDX900 upgraded to HD capability, the HDX will accept the SD card settings from my SDX900. I realize there are settings specific to HD, but I’m wondering if the Paint Settings would take. Are the menus basically the same as the SDX900?

Also, is it possible, especially if the shows I work on will probably stay in Standard Def for a while, that the lens I use on the SDX will work fine on the HDX900? I’ve heard of people using their SD 2/3″ lenses on HD cams, but don’t have experience with that myself.

    Thanks

    Hop,

you need not apologize; I hope that this forum will become the de facto place for all “full sized imager” Panasonic HD questions, especially as the HVX900 starts to arrive in the marketplace.

I can tell you with high certainty that the memo card will not work from the SDX; there are many mismatches in the Pnasonic system, For example even amoungst the Varicams, the memo cards do not match between the “F” and the current “H” models. The tape is a different size between the Varicam and the HVX900. The remore CCU’s are not interchangable, etc.

As regards the lens, while of course the lens mount is the same it is ill-advised to use a SD lens on an HD camera; because the imager consists of many more (double) the number of pixels this affects the “circle of confussion” making a better quality (HD) lens de rigour for use on the HD camera. Now, on the other hand the HD on your SD camera will make an even better picture, especially as regards color aberation.

Even though you might intend to down convert the HVX900 pictures, with the use of a SD lens you’ll have a less sharp picture to start with and I’d guess that the resultant picture would be less sharp than a comperable SDX900 picture because of the circle of confussion issue. Sorry!

Well….dang on both counts, even though I knew the likely answer for both Qs. Great reply though – thanks. Hopefully I can find a good lens for he HDX in the 15k and under range. One other thing – do you think that paint settings transferred manually from an SDX will render very similar results in the HDX in terms of color, contrast, range, etc?

No and why would it when one is working in SD the other in HD color space and resolution.

Would you expect to fit four people into a two seater sport car when the last car you used was a station wagon?

Oh, hey Mr. Bunker, I thought you were dead. I was merely referring to equivalants. No worries, I will do all the testing myself in a month or so and put an end to my own speculative banter. Thanks.

    Ahh Young Grasshopper,

Please conduct the test using apple to apples comparisions not grapes to pineapples. The best testing gear to use for such a test would be a SD/HDSDI waveform vectorscope such as the Leader 5750, DSC cam align chart, and color critical multiformat monitor.

    Good luck,

I was just wondering what your tests with the standard def lens turned up. I’m in the same boat, and I’ve read some threads on the HPX500 with standard def glass. I’ve got a Canon J11x4.5 that I’d like to try on my new HDX900.

    Thanks, Craig
