SDX 900
Posted by Phil Summers on September 17, 2007 at 5:44 pmHi Guys
Got a last minute job in to shoot early tmrw morning for an American client who wants to shoot 24p on the SDX 900 – they have shot other footage in the states on the SDX 900 at 24p but I have a suspicion that the euro models dont shoot 24p only 25p – typically everyone at camera rental house has gone home (19.45h local time) and was wondering if anyone out there could throw some light on the situation.
Many Thanks

While I’m not really an expert on the SDX900, from a quick perusal of the operation manual it does not appear that it is a “universal” camera, like the Varicam and that there are distinct NTSC and PAL versions.
In the Varicam you simply set the Systems Frequency to “60” (from the default of 59.94) and the frame rate to 25fps or 50fps to shoot PAL standard. The 1200A/1400 decks interpret the frame rate (over 60 frames) to output the proper PAL picture.
I’d say your American clients as out of luck in getting a 24p tape from your camera. Their best bet would have been to bring a NTSC camera with them or try to find one in Europe. Just as there are PAL cameras in the states, perhaps some rental houses across the pond carry such an item to accommodate traveling US crews, I don’t know.
The only solution at this point would be to shoot at 25fps and do a standards conversion upon their return; based on the amount of footage it might have been more economical for them to bring their own camera body, but that would have required a little forethought!

September 17, 2007 at 6:20 pmI don’t believe there is a ‘special’ euro model that only shoots euro standards. I think there is only one camera made.
My camera when set to US 720/59.94 shoots only 60P, 30P or 24P. If you have it set to European 720p/50, then you get 50P or 25p.
Same for 1080 with the exception of it also shoots 24P & 24PA. Hope that helps.

September 17, 2007 at 9:08 pmYou’re referring to HDX900, which is a world camera like the Varicam; the question is about the SDX900 which apparently is not. There are two different models, one for NTSC the other for PAL!

September 17, 2007 at 9:18 pmOooops, my bad. I misread his post. He was asking about the SDX, not the HDX. As the late Rosanna Danna would say… “Never mind”.

September 17, 2007 at 9:54 pmThanks, I do feel I made the correct choice. I’ve been shooting with a rental Varicam since it came out. So, I decided the HDX900 was the best choice (for me).

September 18, 2007 at 9:38 amHI,
The SDX900 had two models, one for 50Hz and one for 60 Hz. The 50 Hz model would do 24P, or PA and the 50 Hz model did 25P.
Hope that clarifies,
Jan
