  • SDI INPUT FLICKER — IS IT KONA 2 OR ME?

    Hello all:

I know there was a thread similar to this recently, but…

I purchased an AJA D10A Component Analog to SDI convertor on eBay recently, mostly to get BetaSP analog into my Kona 2 setup. At first, I tried to test the convertor with a Y Pr Pb signal from a DVD deck (had no Beta deck handy…). The green LED on the convertor lit up fine, showing a component signal present, but the SDI ‘light’ on the Kona control panel would not stay lit, and the picture in the FCP capture window was fuzzy and looked like it needed sync. I didn’t feed the convertor sync, nor the Kona 2 (although I have taken Dr. Z’s advice and purchased a generator)…

Suspecting the convertor, I took it to a post facility and hooked it up to a BetaSP and fed the SDI out to a D-Beta deck. Works like a charm. So…my questions are…can I assume that the SDI input on the K-Box is okay, or is there a setting on the control panel I missed? Are there any internal jumpers on the convertor that need to be switched for the D10A to accept a ‘non BetaSP’ signal? Or is the issue the component signal from the DVD deck? Any help/advice welcome.

    Thanks in advance.

    JIM.

I’d e-mail AJA tech support on this one. It seems like that converter works with RGB component signals so it might only be good for the Betacam.

How are the DIPn switches set?

Thanks Gary and David for the thoughts…

This is the older D10A convertor, not the D10AD — so it only has R/R-Y, G/Y, B/B-Y inputs and no (external) DIP switches. I forgot to mention that it also has a (worn) sticker on the bottom that says ‘BetaCa…’ and something else I can’t see. I suspect that David may be right in that it may only work with a BetaSP component signal. In any case, I just wanted to make sure that it wasn’t a Kona 2 SDI issue. Guess I’ll have to get a BetaSP deck and test it out to make sure.

Thanks again for responding to my query.

    Best, JIM.

A google search and the aja site turned up this:

The D10A provides excellent quality component analog to 10-bit serial digital
conversion in a small, low cost package. The D10A works with RGB or YPbPr
component analog inputs (including Betacam and MII) in 525 or 625 line formats.
The D10A has one component analog input (3x BNC), one external sync input, and
three SDI outputs. Input format can be chosen by internal jumpers and level/gain
    controls.

So maybe you have to open it up to convert the compnanet signal, right now it must be set to Betacam.

    Hey David:

Yeah, after I posted my last response, I cracked open the convertor. There are some tiny jumpers that appear to be able to switch between RGB and R/Y, Y, B/Y settings. I’ve e-mailed AJA to see if they can send me a PDF manual — on their site, they only have one for the newer D10AD convertor.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Best, JIM.
