    Hey all,

I’ve had my LH working great doing analog capture for the past 4 or 5 months. Tomorrow a director and the agency are coming by with some footage shot DVCpro50 and a DVCpro deck they are renting. My system: G5 2gig dual, 4.5 gigs Ram OS 10.4.2, FCP 5, Kona LH.

    Is this as simple as:

coming out of the deck into the SDI in on the back of the card, and setting my Kona control panel and FCP settings accordingly? Does it matter that my project is already 8 bit uncompressed? (The B-roll footage we captured last week for this project was on Beta)

Will the SDI in also bring in the audio? (talking heads)

Any gottchyas to be wary of?

    Thanks in advance…

    Have a wonderful day.

Choose the SDI A/V 8 bit easy set up (this will bring in audio and video over SDI). Modify that setting if your footage is anamorphic. Make sure the deck you are renting has SDI outs. You should be in like Flynn, whoever he is.

    Jeremy,

When you say SDI easy setup are you referring to the Kona control panel? If so, if I have my FCP capture setup to AJA 525 29.97 8bit uncompressed then it will go into my project correctly? There doen’t seem to be an SDI easy setup in FCP. Sorry, this is all new to me.

    Have a wonderful day.

One more thing, with SDI capture, what does the device control?

    Have a wonderful day.

In reference to question one, no I’m not referring to the control panel, I’m referring to the FCp easy setups. When you install the Kona LH (I have a kona 2 so i don’t know) where there different installations for analog and digital? If so install the digital ones to get the SDi setups, or perhaps, check the show all button when choosing the easy setup (control-q).

Questions 2: Device control is still RS-422 for SDI captures.

    Chris –
I want you to stop what you are doing, and relax. Go into the Audio/Video Settings of FCP (do you know where that is ? – it’s right near easy setups) – now, once you click on it, a summary page pops up – the middle tab says CAPTURE PRESETS – select this, and scroll down to whatever is checked (something on that list will be checked) – once you find what is checked, double click it – a new menu opens up. Now, see where you can select your video inputs, and audio inputs (SDI, analog composite, Betacam component, etc). My point here is that you need to SCREW AROUND with these menus to become familiar on how the AJA product selects it’s inputs, its compression ratios, etc. When you first go into Audio/Video Settings, you will also see a tab for VTR control – click on this, and see all the choices for VTR control – which include AJA RS422, which is for your Digi Beta VTRs. You must get used to using these menu’s.

We have almost the exact same systems….and the show I do here is shot on DVCPRO50. The only gotcha I have for you is that I notice sometimes the Control Panel “resets” itself. You need to check and make sure you have audio set to embedded…not analog. I got caught once and had to recapture a bunch of tapes. Helps to monitor the Kona too! 🙂 which I wasn’t doing.

Besides that, its really not rocket science. Like Bob said, relax, familiarize yourself with the menus, setup some presets, and you should be good to go.

    Well,

The guys brought over a Sony JH3 deck, did a couple of settings adjustments and all went well, thanks for the help.

    Have a wonderful day.
