  • SDHC and EX Firmware Versions/Serial Numbers

Posted by Michael Palmer on June 20, 2009 at 4:03 pm

We all have been reading how some have had issues with SDHC cards and I would like to see if there is anything to the serial number (build date of the camera) or firmware version that causes this. I rented an EX1 from Tim Pendergrass and while picking up his camera he told me about some issues with his 2-Transcend 32 gig SDHC cards, so I took them and put them into my EX3 and the first card needed to be restored and it did this successfully then I reformatted as far as I know it fixed the card. The second of the 2 cards from Tim also needed to restore but it didn’t give the option, so I removed the MxR and SDHC and tried it in the other slot and it allowed me to restore and reformat. I believe they both are now working and I’m waiting for Tim to confirm that they are.

Here is my firmware/serial numbers to my cameras and I hope others who use the SDHC solution and those have had issues will post theirs.

EX1, Serial Number 0100999, Firmware V1.12_0534 (I preformed this upgrade myself)
EX3, Serial Number 0100693, Firmware V1.02_0078 (Original Firmware)

I have NOT had issues with my MxR/Transcend 16 gig SDHC cards with either of these cameras.

Perhaps we can narrow the issues down this way.

    Thanks

    Michael

    I felt so alone… I thought I was the only one…
    Yay Support Group.

Older Model EX1s have been giving me all kinds of problems with SDHC cards. Transcend (Class 6) 16GB cards that will not be recognized (incorrect media) or do not register at all. I’m in the DC area and I’ve run into this on 4 separate cameras. I actually returned some memory that may have been functional.
I will post the serial numbers shortly, but we were on a 3 camera shoot and the MxM adapter would only function on one camera (the newest)

EX1 MUST have firmware 1.11 or higher to use SDHC.

BTW Michael, had you see that Convergent-Design stopped recommending the Trancend 32GB Flash cards?
They say the had some serious problems.

serial# 110724 & 104145 both have software v1.11_531 transcend 16 gig work great, 32 gig transcend can’t format, although Mike could on his EX-3, I could then use but can’t re-format

Did you try a “double format?”

My 32GB Sandisk cards always fail on first format attempt. I then pull the MxR and reinsert and attempt to format again and it works. It’s very consistent that way.

    Tim,
Can you delete clips so you don’t have to format? I thought the camera I rented from you had a firmware version of V1.13_????, I know it was different from my cameras.

Thanks for all the valuable info,
and esp to Michael Palmer for your empirical approach.

My post regards CENTON SDHC class 6

I have 2 very new EX3’s, but couldn’t stomach Sony SxS price, so I acquired some Hoodman Kits w 16G SDHC.

After a lot of searching and comparison online, I found some SDHC 32G class 6 from Centon ($79 each purchased in-person at FRY’s).

I’ve only used them twice, plus a couple of tests.
So far I’ve not experienced any actual problems using Centon 32 in Hoodman “sleeve”.
I believe one time during testing, a blank SDHC required reformat,
(not certain if it was a Hoodman16 or the Centon32) possibly after deleting the files using MacPro (I’m doing my xfers using USB reader from Hoodman). So far I have been able to xfer the BPAV folder back and forth from the Mac to the camera and both Mac and Camera were able to read the files without issue. Spanned clips seem not a problem as long as both folders were ingested into LogAndCapture at same time.

So far my real footage is in 720/60p. Some testing in 1080/60i.
No experience yet on overcranking w the Centon32s, only the RAW16.

I haven’t seen any posts on Centon SDHC –
    – my COW search found nothing. Anyone else tried them?

I’m thinking that older firmware may be the main issue.
Perhaps newer units (esp ex3) are less prone to 3rd party SxS probs.
(Or maybe I’ve just been lucky so far.) Maybe Michael can tease this out.

    FYI – Mine are
    PMWEX3 serial(s): 0104314, 0104391
