Can SD footage be used in an After Effects template designed for HD footage? For instance, any number of many AE templates designed for HD footage at VideoHive, but here’s one in particular as an example.

Completely ignoring the difference in aspect ratios, if you blow up the SD footage to fit the HD placeholders, it will look blown out. But if you intend for final output to be SD, your final comp will be shrunk down again in the end, so the blown up footage will at least be less noticable as it gets closer to it’s original size (or smaller if it’s not full screen). I realize there should be degradation from blowing up the SD video in the first place but how horrible would it be if it’s going to be shrunk back to SD again?

Or is there some other method for using SD source footage in any of the many HD-quality AE templates that can be found? Thanks.

You are correct that if the final output is going to be SD, there may not be much noticeable degradation going from SD to HD to SD again. In fact, there may not be ANY because the changes in resolution are happening before anything is actually rendered… but i’m not really sure. You could always render out a little test with some footage you have lying around to have a look.

What I would do (and this is just because it is one less step) is simply get your HD template, and drop the whole comp into an SD comp which has your footage. Then you’re skipping the upres downres part completely 🙂

Although just thinking about how those templates work, you may have to put it in the original comp for it to slot in place properly.
