  • SD CRT Broadcast monitor recommendations?

Posted by Michael Lansdell on March 16, 2009 at 5:24 pm

Hi, I’m after recommendations for Standard Definition, CRT Broadcast monitors. SD because my company doesn’t do HD (and is unlikely to for a long time), and CRT because I haven’t seen a decent LCD display yet! I’m currently doing all our colour grading on a Sony PVM14M2E, which is about 13″… Not very good, but my boss has finally caved and has agreed that something bigger might be a good idea. Suggestions, please?

    Cheers!

Michael, one of the best SD CRT ever made by sony was the BVM-20F1U.

It’s the best because it was one of the first CRT monitors
to offer 900+ lines of resolution even though it does not do HD. (which I thought was odd)

I actually have one for sale right now if your interested.

That would be great, but would it ship to the UK and is it okay with PAL?

An LCD to look at is the FSI 1760W. $2,495 and it’s a color accurate monitor. We’re installing one of those and two of the 2450W’s in our shop to replace our CRT’s. And yes, they display SD just like a CRT.

    I also have two PVM’s available. They’re both multi-format SD/HD.

PVM20L5/1 and PVM14L5/1. The 20″ has the SDI input option. The /1 denotes they can playback 24p signals.

I’m currently using a rented PVM-20S1WE, which seems great, what are they like compared to that? Are they Pal compatible? My bosses have said they’d be willing to buy one if i can find it at a decent price.

What would it cost including UK shipping?

Finding a CRT monitor seems to be nigh on impossible…

Yes. The BVM series is the top of the line for Sony. The PVM series that I have are a step below them. However both are excellent for color grading. We’ve delivered over 100 HD Broadcast masters all color graded on the PVM’s in our shop.

I believe all BVM monitors and most of the higher grade PVM monitors are multi standard (PAL and NTSC) There are however different versions of the monitors that make them more appropriate to each standard. Any Sony monitor that has a model number ending with E is designed to work best for EBU/PAL (E is for Europe).

The BVM-20E1E, or BVM-20F1E represent the best ever of standard def monitors. The BVM-20G1E is also and excellent choice.

The BVM-2015P could be 15 years old. While all your choices are used, I would be careful with something like that.

Be aware of your connection needs as the BVMs fully modular and chances are every monitor you find will have a different compliment of cards.

    Hi,

Thank you all for your help. I got the BVM-20F1E in the end, and I’m very happy with it! It came without a manual (tried looking on the internet for this, any ideas?), so I’m not sure about the set up of it yet, but I think I’m pretty much there.

    Cheers once again!

    :o)
