    Hi Dan & Filip

The idea is to provide for an efficient workflow for roto work from within AE by loading parts of either a timeline or a single layer into RAM while roto-ing, to allow for real-time playback as and when required during the roto exercise. Ideally this would be done in the Layer Panel although this isn’t really necessary. A VTR style playback GUI would be great plus selection of frames based on available RAM would be nice too.

    Is this doable?

    Hi Roland,

I’m not really sure if you can achieve via scripting what Nucleo seems to do: rendering with a second copy of after effects, but move the results back in to the ram playback buffer of AE.

However if you have stuff in the Ram and then change a single vertex in your roto: the ram will be purged…

Here’s a simple workaround though, that can save a lot of time::

Create a solid above the layer you’re rotoing, and make it invisible.
    Do a ram preview.
Now roto on the invisble solid: the ram will not get purged, so it’s much faster to scrub through your timeline, or do semi-realtime previews using the space bar.

Of course, you won’t see the actual matting going on, for that you have to enable the trackmatte, and you will need to re-render your rampreview.

Unfortunately, After Effects just isn’t created for realtime work like this.

    Hi Filip

I checked with Steve Forde from Gridiron Software and he said to do the same thing with regards to NucleoPro2.

It would be nice for realtime playback for a single layer for roto purposes. Commotion had it about 7 years ago. Let’s hope it makes it to the features wishlist. 🙂

It’s also a great plugin idea.
