  • Scratch Disk Error NOT Stemming from Lack of Space or misunderstanding of the idea of Scratch Disks

I am sure someone has answered this question before, but I mostly find scratch disk threads stemming from basic misunderstandings. I’m sure mine is as well, but here it is:

I have over 20 GB free space on my scratch disk, but I can’t get FCP to recognize that space as being there. I am not under my minimum and I don’t have the option of using an external as of now. Photoshop has also had the same problem. I don’t have an extravagant amount of RAM, but 2GB has been fine for years now.

What to do? I haven’t defragged (hoping not to have to) but I did trash my preferences.

What is the error you are getting? Or is there one?

On FCP the error is out of memory. Both FCP and Photoshop act as if my scratch disks are full.

[Robin Margolis] “On FCP the error is out of memory.”

FCP’s “Out of memory” errors have nothing to do with your scratch disks. While Photoshop uses a scratch disk like virtual memory (swapping parts of the image out to hard disk if it runs out of RAM), Final Cut Pro uses the scratch disk to store capture and render files. FCP does not use it to augment system RAM.

Are you using very large image files or non-FCP friendly media like MP4 or H.264 video? Searching this forum for “out of memory” will give you some good threads on the causes for this error and how to solve it.

    Robin,

It’s been said, but Out of Memory isn’t that your scratch disk is full. If you’re using FCP 6 or 7 and working in HD, you need 4 gigs (that’s based on the Apple specs for FCP.)

Other possibilities – is it every project? Just one? What kind of footage is it?
