Schoolboy Q By Any Means Music Video Effect

If anyone has seen video for Schoolbooy Q’s “By Any Means” I would love to get your opinions on how they did the effect where they turn someone to black and white (specifically the one that appears at 6:06).
Obviously they rotoscoped him out of the frame and then turned him black and white, but how would they have created the effect of the smoke traveling over his skin as it changed his color? Just some very complex mask path keyframing? Or maybe a use of some track matte?
Would love to hear opinions.

Looks like a Black/white tint with a displaced mask… don’t quote me on it
