  • Scale to frame size – 1080p in 720p timeline with automatic 68% scaling?

    Hi,

In FCP, if you drop a 1080p clip onto a 720p timeline, FCP will automatically scale the clip to 67.67% so that it fills the viewer entirely – the scale shows as 66.67% in the motion tab, as it should: 1080p scaled to 720p is resized to 67.67%.

In contrast, In PPro (CS6), with the “default scale to frame size” off, a 1080p clip on a 720p timeline is 100% scaled, so the image is cropped in the viewer. With the setting on, the clip is scaled so that it fills the viewer 100%, and the “motion – scale” setting shows 100%.

My question is: is it possible in PPro to set up a 720p sequence, import 1080p assets so that they automatically will be scaled to 67.67% when dropped onto the timeline? Or are 1080p clips on a 720p timeline in reality 67.67% scaled with “default scale to frame size” on, even though scaling info shows 100% – so that when clips are scaled up a bit, there will not be any resolution degradation?

    Thanks, cheers,
    Janne

    Hi Janne,

If you simply want to drop 1080 clips into a 720p sequence, Scale to Frame works well automatically. However, if you wish to “zoom in” to the image, then you should uncheck “Scale to Frame” so that you can utilize all the original resolution, and manually change the scale to suit your needs using Adobe Motion effect.

    Hi Jeff,

    thanks for you reply.

As I understand it, it’s not possible in PPro to drop 1080 footage onto a 720 timeline so that it be automatically 67.67% scaled. This is too bad – in FCP I’ve used to doing that and then when editing crop some shots (but not all). How PPro works, I don’t find a convenient way to do that (editing with every shot cropped, as is the case with 1080 footage on a 720 timeline with autoscale off, is not an option).

I guess I’ll drop in a feature request to Adobe.

    cheers

I’ve just come across this annoying problem as well … very frustrating as I like to shoot at 1920 and work in 1280 to give a bit more flexibility over framing … I’ll also put this in as a feature request ..

anyways, what I wanted to ask is if we use “scale to frame size” and then upscale in the motion tab (to say 110%) .. are we losing quality? or is PP smart enough to do the calculations for us?

    cheers
