December 30, 2007 at 7:29 amSooner than I think? Really, Promise? Ok then I think it’s tomorrow. 😉
all kidding aside, i’ll be very happy when I can store all my p2 archives on cheap solid state storage, but i don’t see the cheap part happening any time soon.

December 30, 2007 at 1:36 pmTheir PCMIA units only top out at 16gig with a 30mb/s write speed… Me thinks we will be paying Panasonic’s big “got u” tarrif on P2 cards for awhile. I would love to find a third party vendor for P2 cards.
But their 3.5 ATA / sata class units claim to be 200 times faster than a 15000rpm spindle.. Now that sounds encouraging. But NO prices listed… Better start saving the pennies…

No pricing data means these are very expensive. Remember that the majority of the folks on this forum find a FW 800 unit very expensive. Seeing how much the P2 cards have held their price for the past two years, I’m guessing it will be at least 3 years before these will be at a price point that most folks would afford.

December 30, 2007 at 3:38 pmFW800 drives expensive? People on this forum really believe that? Who? I want names, I don’t believe it. 🙂
As for price, Barefeats.com says that 128g versions are $3,000. I think I’ll wait a while.

Fujifilm has announced that they’ll start making P2 cards in the spring.

4-terabyte hard drives are due by mid year 2008 at about the cost of the present 1-terabyte drives. I’ll bet you a house Sean that you’ll buy many traditional hard drives before you buy even one that is solid state.

December 30, 2007 at 8:38 pmI think that Sean should WAIT until 1TB solid state storage is available. As a matter of fact, wait until you can get 1TB solid state flash cards for the RED camera. This will be 2012, and Sean will still have his current system. Who needs more competition.
Ya know Sean, one day, we will have fibre transmission from our cameras (maybe wireless too) to our GOOGLE central storage server, but somehow, we have to EAT until that happens. So you better buy something until that day happens.

Sounds like a great option for backups. I still think by 2009 we’ll begin seeing flash memory used in post houses for media drives.
