Saving with MP3 – all i see are low quality options?
Hi all,
I have just started using Vegas, it’s an awesome program. Beats the pants off of Premiere Pro. Anyways, I’ve usually been saving my high-quality videos using WAV (PCM, uncompressed audio). I decided to start using MP3 format but I only see “low-quality” options. I can only see 56kBit/s and blow. Also I can choose 24KHz and below, instead of 44.1/48 KHz like one would expect. You can see my list of options here in this screenie:
I thought maybe it meant 24KHz as in each channel is (for a total of 48) but that doesn’t make sense. I tested out by saving at 56 kBit/s @ 24KHz and the sound quality is terrible. How come I don’t see the other options, like 128kBit/s @ 44.1 KHz?

Ok, I’ve been looking for alternative MP3 codecs I can use for the time being. I installed Lame ACM 3.97 codec, which should work in any app that supports those kinds of codecs.
Well it doesn’t even show up in Adobe Premiere Pro (not surprising), and in Sony Vegas, I get an error when saving a video when I choose any of the LAME MP3 options:
“An error occurred while creating the media file
An error occurred while opening a codec.”
What can I do? Are the any other free MP3 codecs I can use to encode through PPro or Vegas? I’m getting pretty frustrated here…

What video format are you rendering to that you get those options?
If I select MP3 in the “Save as type” box, I get templates ranging from “16 Kbps, Voice Audio” to “Highest Quality VBR Stereo Audio”. -
I’m using Video for Windows (AVI). It limits me to those options no matter which AVI codec I choose.
Also I just installed the Radium MP3 1.263 codec as well, and it shows up in the list of available audio formats, but gives me the same error as LAME MP3.
Speaking of which, this is getting pretty lame. The build in MP3 options are limited, and both external codec’s I installed won’t work in Vegas.

You must be rendering an HDV clip as I don’t see those options in SD AVI.
Why not render the clip without any audio, render the MP3 separately (giving you all the good options) and join them together afterwards?
I say this not really knowing how you’d do this last part but I’m sure someone here will have an idea.I’m curious as to why you want to do an MP3 render instead of regular audio.

What do you mean you don’t see the options in SD AVI? You probably wouldn’t see the LAME and Radium MP3 options because I just installed those to see if I could save using them.
And why don’t I use ‘regular’ audio? You mean Uncompressed WAV (PCM)? Well, I think it’s kind of obvious, being “uncompressed” and all… I could save the audio separate sure, but that requires a lot more time and effort. Because then I’d need to use a program to splice the two together.

I mean that they’re not there.
I put a DV-AVI clip on the timeline, select “Video for Windows (*.avi)” in the “Save as type” box and “NTSC DV” in the “Template” box.
When I click “Custom – Audio”, the only thing in the “Audio” box is “PCM Uncompressed”.
There are no other options available.“Well, I think it’s kind of obvious, being “uncompressed” and all.”
It may be obvious to you but, as I have no idea what you’re trying to do with the resulting file (even though I did ask), it’s not obvious to me.

Well I’m using mainly the DivX 6.7 codec for my AVIs, but most other AVI codecs that I select from the drop-down list that give “MPEG Layer-3” as an option, only allow up to 56kBit/s as an choice.
And I’m planning to eventually upload the video to the web, and no use wasting upload time trying to send a file with uncompressed WAV audio. Also just in general, I think MP3 is the best audio for any “sub-HD” video…
Regardless, it doesn’t matter what I’m doing with the video after encoding, I’d just like to know why I can’t do MP3 in any kind of substantial quality…

OK. A bit more information definitely helps 🙂
A search of this forum for the past 2 years using “divx mp3” only turned up two relevant posts.
Unfortunately, because it’s DivX & Vegas, there’s no guaranteed solution.Mp3 encoding – higher bit rates not available ??
