SATA & Fibre cards with LHe
Posted by Matt Kerstein on December 26, 2007 at 11:39 pmIs it possible to run a sata & fibre card along with a KONA LHe card or is there not enough space?

MacPro or a G5?
A 4x lane PCIe slot will work fine for any single/dual port fiber card. If you want both a fiber card and an eSATA card, Sonnet makes a great little 1x lane 2 port eSATA board (E2P).

December 27, 2007 at 1:57 amIf you don’t ask specific questions, it is impossible to answer you accurately.
If you have a MAC Pro (what computer do you have ? ), you can put your Kona LHe into slot 3, your Fibre card in slot 4, and your SATA card into slot 2. Your expansion slot utility will open. Change it so that your GRAPHICS card is no longer x16, but x8, and slot 2 is x8, and slots 3 and 4 are x4. You will not get maximum performance with your graphics card, but this WILL WORK (forget about running motion and color).
Optimum performace is with ONE storage card in slot 4 and the Kona in slot 3 (and nothing in slot 2), with your graphics at x16, slot 2 at x1, slot 3 and 4 and x4.
So why doesnt’ Apple give you a lot more slots with a lot more bandwidth ?????? Great question.
For more specific answers, post the exact SATA, exact Fibre, and exact computer you are using.

December 28, 2007 at 2:39 amThanx for the response.
We run a Apple G5 Power PC 4X2.5GHz, 6.5GB RAM with AJA KONA LHe. 12TB of SATA storage. System profile list the SATA model as: HDS724040KLSA80. We have not purchased a FIBRE card yet. Client wants to bring in a project on a Xserve RAID for us to online & finish
So it looks like we should run one storage card interface at a time not SATA & FIBRE at the same time? With re-seating card s with loss of performance.

December 28, 2007 at 7:46 pmno there is no expansion box available. (april 2008)
You have the MAC Quad. Put the Kona LHe in slot 4, and the 2
storage cards in slots 2 and 3. You should be fine. Worst case, dont’ run FCP, and transfer the DATA from the XServe RAID onto your SATA.Bob Zelin
