(i’m starting to spend more time on the FCP BASIC forum so i don’t overload you smarty pants guys with too many ridiculously stupid posts, but here’s one i thought might be okay…)

i just got a 500 GB external Seagate SATA drive, which appears to be working fine, and i’ve got a few hundred gigs of HDCam footage on it that had been captured with the DVCPro HD codec. i figured these would probably play back the footage smoothly, but alas, they do not. they load and play fine in FCP, but just not off the drive directly in QT. they play a few frames per second, jumping forward a few seconds, etc. no biggie, but just hoping i have everything configured properly? does this sound normal to the rest of ye experienced lads?

Yes. If you stripe two SATA drives together, you will be okay.

Make sure to move any data off of the first one before you do as you will lose any information when you stripe it.

    Mortimer,

Very common, as QT player isn’t optimized for realtime playback of large video files.

Also, while a single SATA drive may suffice for very basic DVCProHD editing, don’t cut yourself short. Consider striping at least two together, and preferably three or four, to give yourself lots of overhead for multiple video streams and multiple audio tracks. Speed and space in a hard drive subsystem are as important as anything in the day to day operation of your professional NLE system.

    Jeremy,

I have four SATA drives striped, but QT player still doesn’t play DVCProHD without dropping frames.

Hmm, never seen that. Although I usually use KonaTV to preview stuff.

That’s strange. We are also doing DVCProHD with two drives without a hiccup, 100 mbps ist not that much.

With four drives we can do HD uncompressed in 720p, something seems to be wrong with your setup.

I think you misunderstood Uli. Its just playing back smoothly in QT player thats the issue.

As for editing DVCProHD, I recommended at least two drives, but preferably three or four, not because you absolutely have to have them, but because everything just works better.

Yeah…I recommend two drives. I edited my first DVCPRO HD show with three G-Raid drives…they are two drives hardware raided together inside a case. COnnected to the computer via Firewire 800.

But these are the older G-Raids…the newer ones can’t be daisy chained. But eSata is the way to go. And a SINGLE e-SATA would be FINE for DVCPRO HD. ONe stream, but fine.
