san melody
Posted by Shane Chadder on June 1, 2005 at 9:39 pmHas anyone tried the San Melody software as a way of sharing media files? The software can be tried as a demo for 21 days. It sounds like it will run on an off the shelf PC.
Any info appreciated.

June 2, 2005 at 2:33 amI haven’t ran into this one before, It looks like a windows only thing though. If your looking for an iSCSI setup check out Studio Network Solutions (https://www.studionetworksolutions.com/content/products/isanmp/default.asp) It’s cross platform too, if your into that kinda thing.

June 2, 2005 at 1:59 pmThanks
I’ll chech it out.
Windows only is what I’m after. I just want a central storage system to serve up DV25 and DV50 to three edit systems. The edit systems would store all their uncompressed footage locally.
I don’t get iscsi, is it just a network backbone like gigabit ethernet?

June 2, 2005 at 2:47 pmiSCSI is encapsulating SCSI command protocals within ethernet. Thus you can attach storage anywhere on the network and still have block level access to that storage. Block level access allows you to retrieve the data you request by grabbing the datas blocks. In a NAS you’d have to send the request to the filesystem which would then transfer the block data…one more step that slows some tasks down. If I’m a bit rough on that description forgive me I’m trying to get my head around these technologies as well.
I’ve checked out the Datacore stuff and it seems pretty decent. Let us know what you think of the demo. I heard it’s easy to setup.

I’ve seen this one before. Can you say how the licensing and costs work for the SANmp line?
