As luck would have it, I was given virtually for free a 2nd GTX470 card recently. I thought it would be great to run one for the GUI and the other for a CPU. Thus I could work in both Smoke, Nuke, AE etc. on one attached to the minidisplay port connection on the monitor (dvi to minidisplay adapter) and Resolve on the other without having to switch out cards. However, as we all know the additional needed power supply is always an issue. I have found a somewhat clunky, expensive solution here:

But really, I am a bit concerned about the wiring and inadvertently frying something.

Has anyone found a more elegant solution, and if so could you share the specific details of how you wired it up? Has any manufacturer created a solution specifically for this need with the Mac Pro, one where you can close the side panel or actually place the power supply in the machine itself?

    Thanks!

I was considering this VisionTek for my setup with a 5870 and 470 but it needs another PCIe slot. With my BlackMagic and HDMI output slot I just don’t have the space for 2 double-wides, power and video output card. I was 2 slots short actually. I haven’t ruled out drilling an extra hole just for these extra cabling needs and making it look proper but for now I just went with a GT120 to be up and running.

If you have an extra slot then feel free to make it so.
