RS 422 with a USB adaptor crashing FCP
Lots of fun with FCP today.
This week I replaced my Media 100 system with a Dual 2’s G5 for broadcast commercial work. I use 2 edit suites in my shop, and the new G5 (On FCP 4.5) runs alongside a G4 based Final Cut System which I’ve had for years.
The issue that’s been coming up this week has been deck control. I run 2 decks, a Sony BVW-75 Betacam, and a Sony DSR-45DV Deck. What I need to do is be able to control both decks from both edit suites. This was never an issue using the Media 100 system and the G4 together, but with the new G5, I’ve had to invest in a USB to Serial adaptor to achieve RS-422 control… and it won’t work.
Everything is still 100% on my G4. I can control and capture from DV, and I can also control the Beta from RS-422 (an internal card) while I capture through a DV breakout box. Because of this second unit, I know there are no hardware issues.
However, no matter how I configure my USB to Serial adaptors to get the G5 to try and control my betacam deck, I get about one second of ‘VTR OK’ … then I beachball and have to force quit. Video comes in just fine from the Beta, converted to DV, but no deck.
I’ve swapped out cables, updated drivers, reinstalled FCP, caught up on software updates, and even purchased a backup USB/Serial connector. Nothing works.
One thing that I’m aware of is that as I configure the USB/Serial port which is created when I install these adaptors, the name of the port is very slightly different in my network prefs, compared to when I select that port in FCP’s A/V settings for device control… suffixed with a ‘0’ in the name or something.
Any ideas?
