I rotoscope by exporting a video clip in after effects as filmstrip. I then open it in photoshop and use hexagonal lasso on about 100 frames in the filmstrip (depending on how long the video clip is). Am I doing the right thing or is there an easier way to do rotoscoping?

Well, you could get a dedicated roto-tool like SilhouetteRoto… Have never used it myself since I don’t do much stuff of the type, but people who have speak highly of it.

You can draw and keyframe a group of masks in AE. I’ll point out my usual link that has a very clear and visual explanation of rotoscoping. It’s not AE specific but the ideas are the same no matter what program you use.
