    Thanks for all the replies, I got the solution to the problem from “Sam mltn’s” post:

    Try changing the Z orientation then rotate on X and it will work. it would be nice if there was a way to change the render order like you can do in card dance so Z would render before X but as it is the order is orientation, x, y, then z. that’s why you have to use orientation

    I basically had many layers… and wanted them all to rotate around there own x-axis when I rotate the null object. Changing the orientation before as he says above makes sure they rotate on the local axis instead of the world axis.

    To further what Mylenium is saying, this is why I always use nulls for any changes for rotations I want to make. Parenting to nulls solves almost all problems and keeps all the layers of movement very clean and seperated from each other. Trying to get too much rotations and position changes on one single layer is too much complication me thinks.

    Just out of curiosity, If you parented your layer to a null parented to a null. Would it not work to offset the first null (or second null) the 45 degrees in Z and the other in X?
