  • Revisiting 24fps vs. 23.976fps

Posted by Michael Nichols on August 20, 2010 at 2:22 am

Because Math isn’t my strong suit, I’d like an answer to something.

I sent an OMF of a project to my sound editor at 23.976 (maybe…more on that later)

He sent me back AIF stems that only sync when I apply a speed change of 100.10%

Initially, my project was 24fps, not 23.976. I am using DPX scans and gluetools. The project has undergone so many changes and such. Right now, my easy set up and project and sequence settings are all 23.976.

My question is this: Did my sound mixer work at 24fps or 23.976?

Sorry to report, that I cannot get a straight answer there, so I am relying on math. If I have to slow down his stems to get me in sync, I am GUESSING that I am slowing down 23.976 to match my footage which is still at 24fps (because I didn’t correctly switch over from 24fps to 23.976?)

Oh I didn’t realize a restart was in order when you change the easy set up and then reimport.

    Thanks!

Just a restart of the app, not the computer.

OK, I set my easy set up to 1080 23.98fps in FCP and used Automatic Duck Pro Import to bring the AAF file from Pro Tools back into FCP and got this message (The frame rate of the sequence (24) was changed to match the selected sequence preset (2398)

This leads me to believe that my sound guy worked at 24 and not 23.98

I changed the easy set and restarted FCP and brought the same AAF in through Auto Duck and did not get the error. However, the 2 sequences are exactly the same length.

    But wasn’t it originally 24.0?

I failed to mention that you need to delete all the auio out of the project, then set easy setup, then wwuit fcp, then restart fcp.

    Yeah, it would.

Meaning the audio is the same length?

This project is one big minefield!

As a test, I created a new project with an easy set up of 23.98 and imported and got the message saying the AAF import frame rate (24) was changed to match the sequence (2398)

I changed the easy set up to 24, saved and then quit FCP.

I restarted and re-imported same AAF and did not get the “Changed frame rate” message, but yes, the overall project length is exactly the same between the 23.98 sequence and the 24 sequence. The edits are all in the same place as well.

The project was initially 24, but I set Gluetools to read DPX files at 23.98 and re-imported everything. I created a new sequence and pasted edits in a sequence that was 23.98 and didn’t need to render anything. Perhaps this is my mistake in this situation. That’s the sequence I exported out to the sound mixer. He claims to be using the settings set forth by the OMF I sent.

Why not just use the aif stems?

I am re-mixing with another house. I have the old protools sessions and new OMFs that I exported from my sequence and I want to make sure I do everything correct this time.
