October 10, 2007 at 10:40 pmi have hard that a “Save As” is supposed to “re-invigorate” the links in FCP between clips and files.
not sure if it’s true,
but if it is, it makes sense to do a save as every day.some people work like this all the time,
but personally i don’t like having a new project every day. i wind up with hundreds of capture scratch and render folders. (FCP creates a new set of these for every project)
so a possible solution would be to “save as” as a dated back up,
then “save as” again as the original name.this wouldn’t FIX already broken links,
but it’s supposed to help stop them breaking in the first place.nick

January 20, 2011 at 1:26 amTHANK YOU! I’ve been reading this post, hoping someone would understand my pain. I love Avid match back, it WORKS, you get the clip, always. In Final Cut, you might match it, might not. Hey, open the bin, and select another clip, then test it, and it works. Then try it again. BOOP. Doesn’t work. Oh, maybe you want to make another clip because it can’t find it? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? What kind of solution is that? It’s so lame. I’ve been a longtime editor and for this function not to work is simply inexcusable. We need a shakeup at Final Cut management to fix some of these BASIC things. Come on guys. Who edits without having to match back to their material? ARRRRg. can you tell I’m angry about this?

January 20, 2011 at 3:10 amthis is a pretty old post, so maybe you’ve found some of the more recent ones.
the situation hasn’t changed much, but there are a couple of knows tricks.1.
Match back to bin only works if your timeline clip and browser clip are in the SAME PROJECT
this will NOT work between projects, so you cant have rushes in one project, and active edit sequences in another2.
Copying a bin of master clips PLUS a sequence containing affiliates of the same clips from one FCP project to another will break the Master Affiliate relationship.
the way to do it is to copy clips and sequences separately.
copy/paste the clips, copy/paste the sequences (doesn’t matter which order)same goes for Multiclips and Clips.
the last feature i worked on with multclips, i had to copy A: the clips, B the multiclips and C the rushes sequences across from the assistant project to my project each day as 3 separate operations.hope that helps somewhat.

January 20, 2011 at 6:46 pmThanks for the response.
nope, I’m using the same project! Also weird thing is, when I put a new version of that clip into the timeline, and THEN try to match back, it works. Otherwise I get the same message, “the clips master is not present, do you want to create a new clip?”
