I closed my project, opened another then reopened the first, and now my Reveal Master Clip function no longer works. It is the same project I was using, and I did NOT bring any material in from the other project.

As editing without this function is painfully slow, I would be most thankful if anyone could guide me to restoring the links.

    Thanks

The clip has to be in the Viewer for this function to work… is it? If it’s from the Timeline, then perform a match frame, and it will open in the Viewer… There’s no setting change or whatever that would cause this to quit functioning.

Might trash your prefrence files if this doesn’t fix you up. https://fcprescue.andersholck.com/
has a dandy utility for this.

I did match-frame first, bringing the clip to the viewer, it is finding the clip in the bin that is not working. It tried trashing the prefs with the utility you mentioned, but no go.

    Thanks though.

Sounds like it’s an independent clip. When you match frame what does it say at the top of the viewer, does it give the project name or something else?

It says “clip name in project” The clip name being the correct name and the project name also being correct. (that is the clip that was created in the current project – in other words, it all looks right to me)

Is this the current version of FCP?

There were weird things when bins for open and docked or some such that caused this. I think it’s gone in v6.

I sorry to say, IMO, that FCP’s match frame/find bin is nothing but garbage. Garbage, garbage, garbage. You will never be as satisfied as you once were with Avid’s version of the same functions. You are mostly SOL, so my advice is to establish the location of your clip media in bins, and then NEVER CHANGE them. FCP will lose track. The one thing FCP has added that partially makes up for this is their “can’t find clip, would you like tocreate a new one?’ function, which makes a mess of your media management. Ugh.

Sorry this isn’t much help, but I’ve been pretty dissatisfied with this aspect of FCP that I had to vent.

Now if they would only fix it so that changing the speed of a clip doesn’t ripple your edit!! Errrrr!

i have to say that the Master Affiliate relationship is insanely easy to break in FCP.

i cut some newly imported clips into a timeline recently, and within a week i had lost the ability to Shift F or “reveal master clip”

when this happened to me in the past (FCP 5.04, and FCP 5.11) i got a warning on opening the project.
    this time, (FCP 5.14) nothing

not sure i understand as i haven’t used avid for years
when FCP DOES work, it;s fine.
apart from it working consistently, is there something about avid’s implementation that is better than FCP’s?

    what weevie said ^^^

this really does stink. i sure hope they resolve this. the worst is having to hear the avid dinosaurs talk about how much superior avid is … blah blah blah … and you just have to sit there and bite your tongue.
