Returning or selling AppStore Version
Posted by Sascha Engel on April 25, 2017 at 10:00 amHi,
I have a bizarre issue with the AppStore Version of DaVinci.
A while ago I bought this version, knowing about some limitations in comparison to the
Dongle Version. But now, having a new 980ti Card, I realized, it does not harvest any of the GPU’s horsepower.
After a long research on the Net, I finally figured, that the AppStore Version is only supporting OpenCL.
This, for me, is an absolute deal breaker and I want/have to purchase the Dongle Version now.
But this means, I spent money double: On the AppStore and Dongle Version.
Is there any way to sell you AppStore Version license? It would be very strange to be stuck with a 500.-$ product, that I have no use for.
Thanx for any ideas, how to solve this.
Best,
Sascha

April 25, 2017 at 4:09 pmHi Sacha,
That’s a bummer. No clue how to solve this, but if you can, wait for the new version V14. The studio version has no dongle anymore and is much cheaper. It is currently in beta.

April 25, 2017 at 4:21 pmHi Richard,
Good to hear, I was about to buy a used Dongle already.
I download the Light Version of 14 – it rocks big time.
Does the Studio version for sure not need a Dongle anymore in 14?
Yes, I saw it will be 300.-$, but if I cannot return or sell my AppStore Version it is still a bummer….I paid first 500.-$ for the AppStore version and now 300.-$ for the Studio version.Best,

April 25, 2017 at 5:59 pmIf you can get your hands on a used dongle you should be able get the Studio version (in beta) from the BMD website. Going forward I don’t know how the licensing will work. I wish there was better news for you.

April 28, 2017 at 11:07 amYour only chance is to ask for a refund via the App Store Support, claiming it basically has limitations that are not specified in the description.
I had to do so with the first iteration of FCPX, it wasn’t quick but it worked.

April 28, 2017 at 11:13 amHi Jose,
I wrote the AppStore of Apple and got already an answer (see below).
Do you think there is a point on keeping to insist?
For me the reasoning it’s long ago, does not count, since I only could understand the limitations,
when changing my GPU.Thanx for any further advice.
Greetings.
Hi Sascha,
I’m so sorry to hear that you’re having issues using the DaVinci Resolve Studio app that you’ve purchased. I will be happy to help you get the best support for this.
After carefully reviewing your case, we’ve determined your purchase doesn’t meet the conditions for a refund as the purchase is too old to be refunded. If you’d like to learn more about our refund policy, see this page:

April 28, 2017 at 4:00 pmSorry for your loss. We’re all stuck with software expenses after condition changes. Guess it is part of the game ; p

April 30, 2017 at 10:05 amHi Morten,
AppStore answered me by now: No refund and not even the possibility of selling the AppStore License.
A Real Bummer.
Even though they offered some movie rentals as compensation I find this absolutely not right:
If I buy a software, I always have the option, to sell it to another user.
That this is not not possible with cheap Apps on the Store makes sense.
But a Software for 500.-$ and not to imply the possibility of selling it further, specially when certain
limitations were not really put forward while purchasing is a little questionable. to say the least.I learned my lesson, and will think very carefully when thinking of buying another Software from AppStore directly.
Best,
Sascha

April 30, 2017 at 10:25 amIt doesn’t work that way. You do nou BUY the software – you license to use it.
Normally such a license cannot be transferred to another person…– No Parking Production –

April 30, 2017 at 10:29 amYes, but that is exactly where I see the fault:
In old days, when buying a software let’s say a FCS, you where able to sell it.
Nowadays, you spend a lot of money for a software and when it’s licensed, you are stuck with it.
That is ok, I think, we stuff up to 200.-$ – fair enough.
But a 500.-$ Software? For me it’s Dongle’d Version from now on, if available.
I learned my lesson from that waste of money.Best,
Sascha

April 30, 2017 at 11:31 amBad luck for you that BM just removed the dongle from R14…
I would call on BM and hear if you can “trade in” for the new version.
