Return Key won’t play timeline
Hi gang…
I’m rarely in the Premiere Pro forum, I usually haunt/host serveral others forums here on the COW, but now I have a Premiere issue…
Two of our suites are identical, Windows 7 machines running CS6, Matrox MX02.
Starting just today there’s been something peculiar happening on my other editor’s machine (which is only a couple of weeks old and has been working flawlessly). In Premiere, hitting the RETURN key no longer plays his timeline. It just just nothing. He’s had to resort to placing a curser and hitting the space bar to play the timeline.
Like me, he just instinctively hits the return key to play, but it does nothing.
Now, if there is something that needs RENDERING on the timeline, hitting the return key will render the area… but not play it.
Could this be an unknown setting somewhere that got changed? We are both baffled by it…. and I’m anticipating a lot of cursing if it stays this way much longer.

Funny, I always use the space bar to play the timeline. I wasnt aware the Return key also had that function.

Hitting the return key plays the work bar area (and renders, if anything needs rendering). But if no renders are needed, it will just play it. Or, at least it’s supposed too. That’s the way I do it 99% of the time… couldn’t live without that.

Then I suggest deleting Preferences for PrP (booting up with shift and option keys depressed) for starters. See if that brings it back.

Have you checked the Keyboard Shortcuts screen to make sure that its still assigned in the manner it should be?

You do have the box checked in preferences-general to “play work area after rendering previews”?

I couldn’t say, Tim… it’s not my personal suite but I’ll have the editor who calls that room home check that first thing.
Sounds like something that’s entirely possible… frankly, I didn’t even know there was such a checkbox, every version of Premiere that I have ever worked with in the past 16 years (going back to 4.0) always worked the same way… hit enter and you play the timeline. I wasn’t aware there was an option for it not to, but it makes sense. Oddly it was working as we were used to up until today suddenly… and the editor says he didn’t change anything or adjust any settings… but things do happen.

Good to hear from you too Terry.
The checkbox has always been checked by default, so many people never give it any thought.
For me, I was happy to be able to hide the work area for less clutter and only use in/out for range/render operations.

That did the trick, Tim… one little checkbox, easy fix.
We looked and looked for something to that effect, but just didn’t see it or wasn’t looking in the right place. That’s an option that I never even knew existed before, so didn’t know it was possible for the timeline to not play when hitting ENTER.

Just like putting the media cache where you want it so you don’t have to re-conform everything when you switch workstations. A lot of Adobe is that “one little checkbox” that will drive you nuts until you find it. 🙂
