File recovery is possible in Windows file in the FAT or NTFS world because a file is “deleted” by simply changing the first character of the filename in the first cluster of the file chain to a null character. File recovery programs ignore this null character. For example, if you are looking for the deleted file named “where I hide the super-lotto ticket.doc”, the file recovery program will find “?here I hide the super-lotto ticket.doc”.
This only works if you haven’t written ANYTHING on the drive since the delete. When the O/S wants to write another file, it just looks for a file cluster where the filename starts with a null character.
I really don’t know how the camera, which is 99.9% likely to be running a version of Linux, deletes files, but since the CF cards are FAT formatted, it’s likely that recovery is possible.
