Restoring original 16-bit values after adjusting contrast
I am working with a 16-bit TIFF image in which I would like to touch-up a few areas using the cloning tool, then re-save as a 16-bit TIFF. In order to view the image on my 8-bit display while I am performing the edits, I adjusted the contrast. Now I would like to restore the original greyscale and re-save my edited image as a 16-bit TIFF. It is important that that the integrity greyscale values are retained, as this is scientific data.
Is there a way to do this?

Maybe I am wrong, but I always believed that scientific results were not supposed to be cleaned up using things like clone-tools etc..
