I dug up an old AE file from way back in 2002. I used what was then known as FE Particle Systems II. It’s now known as CC Particle Systems II in my current AECS2. Anyway to restore this effect on my layer and get AE to recognize that is as the correct plugin or has it been completely rewritten and I should just start from scratch?

The project would not be identical. New and modified controls in CC are not compatible with the older FE. The best solution would be to dig up your old FE plugins.

If you’re feeling adventurous you could try one thing. This is nothing we recommend and we do not guarantee that it will work in any way, it may very well crash AE and possibly cause data loss. Still interested?
Ok, make three backups of your project in three separate locations one of which should be on a CD or DVD. 😉
Make a copy of the project and name it “daring_test.aep”.
Open it in a text editor (TextEdit or TextPad?).
Use Find & Replace, search for “FE Particle” and replace with “CC Particle” – go.
    Save
Open the project and pray to favored Deity.
If you only get warning messages about control conversions, then part of the project may still be useful.
In my experience the project usually won’t open because of errors.

Without warranty of any kind, either expressed or implied. The entire risk arising maintains with you.

Always great to see you online, Jens, helping us get the most out of CC and legacy FE/SE filters.
That was, however, one of the weirder things I’ve ever seen you post!

Cheers, posting before having my first cup of tea in the morning could have that effect.
