I read somewhere in the past about what different video transitions convey different messages. Can anyone point me to some documents about that?

Other than bringing attention to themselves, and away from your content, I don’t hink they convey much. The rule is basically the least the better.

There are other ways to transition with custom swipes and alpha mattes that can fit better witha piece, but it’s still very easy to over do it.

I find a dip to black being the most powerful and effective way to transition.

Transitions can certainly be used to good effect. For example, a clockwise sweep often indicates a change in time.

I know that there have been bits and pieces of information such as that posted here in the past, but I don’t know of an article on the Cow about transitions that mention what people use to indicate certain things like passage of time, change of location, etc.

However, if you Google “transitions indicate passage of time” (without the quotes) you will find some interesting articles.
