“Are we there yet” ? Just waiting for a nice thing to appear in my mailbox, but no word from the distributor whether it will be sooner or later. I feel like I’m 6 again and waiting for my parents to come home from their business trip with some fancy new Lego set.

sounds like a lot of stuff to add just to get a grading suite…..all of a sudden that $1000 price point isn’t such a great deal. even if the software was $100 bucks its still gonna cost a whack of cash just to get a basic suite up and running! nice to know some things at davinci still haven’t changed…the marketing side!!!!

Well.. that depends entirely on your situation. Even if you were to buy Final Cut Studio and build a simple Color suite from scratch, it would be more or less the same price tag. The only major difference is two GPUs instead of one.

And I wouldn’t say it’s a “trick” by BMD. You’re not required to buy some kick ass super expensive equipment, except the software itself. And it’s not like BMD is running away with your money with a big grin on their face. If you consider the price of the software vs. the possibilities, I wouldn’t complain about the “extra costs” it will be to get up to spec with either an upgraded or new Mac Pro and a 3rd party or the Resolve panel.

But then again, I might be what’s known as a “fanboy” and a “geek”. Even though I have no clue how to use it, I just gotta have one.

According to your IMDB page, it says you’ve been a colorist since 1988. I find it hard to believe that someone who’s been grading that long is actually complaining about spending a few thousand dollars when this kind of kit would have cost hundreds of thousands just a little while ago. If you already have a real color grading suite, then you’re halfway there.

Resolve does have internal scopes and a viewer which you can use if you have no other option. That means you only have to spend a little money on compatible GPUs.

hey thanks for the info…didnt even know i was on imdb…and actually i have been a colorist since 1978 before the first davinci was even released….ever hear of topsy and the awful talking corporate color box…whatever it was called….i had one of the first davincis ever made in toronto….almost half a century ago. guess i have a bit of experience but i don’t wanna pay for the pro version of imdb just for the sake of a resume….unless you know of a way i can update my details for free then i’ll show you a resume as long as a football field….grading is more of a hobby for me now that i’m semi retired in south africa. thats why i love my color suite…hardly any overhead, no staff, only take on jobs that i have an interest in. sure i miss the big bucks but for me its all about adapting and evolving…just look to the dinosaurs for example. i cant wait for the day when every joe film maker out there has a kick ass color correction suite on his ipad….

[kim krause] “i cant wait for the day when every joe film maker out there”

    Hey, kim, I resemble that!~

It was a System 60XL…. “Please, Try Again!” *maracas* rewind the Bosch.

and isn’t everybody on imdb? and even for stuff that we’re only rumoured to have been associated with.

Since you have a resume a football field long, it seems even more ridiculous that you’re complaining about buying a $995 video card and $800 on GPUs. Just that right there will get you way farther than any Color system you own.

Have you seen what Resolve can do compared to Color or are you just speaking from your experience with an ancient 2K? I took a 10 session course covering Resolve that was recorded in late 2008, and that old system was still light years ahead of what Color can do now and BMD explicitly stated that they’re releasing a fully functioning version. If you can’t playback 10 nodes applied to a RED clip in real time, then you can just render it quickly and play it back in real time.

And in case you didn’t notice, Black Magic is one of the companies that is slowly making that “kick ass color correction suite” for every “joe film maker” a reality.

How much would this cost from a company like AJA?

Can Resolve for Mac input and output 2k/4k and R3D natively? (realtime or not)

sorry buddy but you not getting the picture here….first up i dont care if i’m grading with a davinci or a toothbrush….when i set out on this adventure with color a few years back i never had any aspirations of it being more than a hobby and i left the big guns world of post production to see what would happen. to my surprise i came to the realization that you don’t need millions of dollars of equipment and hi-tech support to actually create a nice body of work that i am very proud of. it’s not my intention to put down resolve…it is an amazing feat of technical engineering and i am very open to one day giving it a spin. its just that for now, in the market i service and the country i live in, spending money chasing the next big thing is not very practical. often our local producers have budgets that are only 1/10th that of an american budget. on top that any gear that we bring into the country costs almost twice as much as in the states…i just bought a new macbook pro and it set me back $4000 (the exact same machine costs under $2000 in america) i hope i’m getting through to you now.. currently i see no real need to upgrade…and it will cost me a few bucks…$1000 is 2 months salary for alot of people here…and i will need to upgrade my old mac and add some hardware as you mentioned….i would love to drive a ferrari but do i need one? no! which brings me back to the driver…i can bitch about a lot of things that drive me crazy when i use color but it does what it has to do in the hands of a skilled operator….i guess what i’m really trying to say is go ahead and buy resolve if you really need it, but don’t buy into the concept that one thing is better than the other….my old renault takes me from A to B without any hitches….and uses way less gas than that fancy ferrari..will resolve allow me to work faster? maybe! will it make the pictures look better? not really sure! will it put more money in my pocket at the end of the day? possibly..in the meantime i am extremely proud to provide a service to my clients using the tools at hand…

I still can’t see the problem of jumping on the ‘Resolve for Mac’ train – except the big downer – double $$$ rates at your location. Which is a pitty.
