July 15, 2010 at 12:39 pmthats my biggest reservation….as i’ve mentioned before budgets are so tight sometimes the extra i might have to charge for upgrading might make it tough for clients to justify doing the grade…i’ve had instances where even a few hundred bucks made a big difference in the clients budget. it makes for clever thinking tho! when i put my suite together i had to make a lot of compromises…the 36 inch monitor instead of the 48 inch one, the slightly slower mac instead of the super fastest one, less storage space, etc….i even chose to work from home so i wouldn’t incur the extra cost of an office space plus parking and all the other stuff that goes with that…luckily i found a good balance of things and have lots of good work go thru my place that i am very proud of! gonna wait and see what others experiences with resolve for mac are before i make the jump, if i ever do!

July 15, 2010 at 12:52 pmI know the situation. That’s how it’s been for me ever since I started out, with Apple Color. I started in the small with amateur films, then progressed slowly to some more interesting stuff with some really good directors and photographers. Often they push the budget to the limits on the production, but when it comes to post production, nobody seems to think it’s something that takes a lot of time. I often (if not always..) have to give them a discount, small or big, in order to get the job at all, thus earning enough to at least cover the office, insurance, phone bills, food, rent for apartment, and if I’m lucky, I have some left overs in my pocket that I can spend on cool gadgets like a Playstation or something.
A 36″ grade quality monitor would be welcome. My 17″ is a bit small, but does the job.

July 16, 2010 at 3:28 amWe all know that it’s the talent, not the tools that make a nice body of work, but that wasn’t the subject. That’s an old concept and no one here disagrees with it, but with all due respect for that philosophy, I’ll go get a new Ferrari if it’s the price of my used STI, even if the STI gets me around just fine. Resolve doesn’t mean I’m getting rid of Color, and that’s why I’m interested in Magma and Cubix. I’ve figured out a way to fit my Ferrari and Subaru in a one car garage.
Your reservations and “Jedi Knights vs.The Darkside” opinions seem legitimate to you, but it doesn’t make sense to spew negative opinions about DaVinci/BMD’s “marketing” because Resolve’s price isn’t based around your particular market or self proclaimed hobby. Many freelance colorists in the Americas and Europe, from your own words, get paid more and pay less for their gear so according to our rates, BMD has done us a favor by cheaply expanding the average colorist’s personal toolset with an app that used to be reserved for high end studios.
Before Resolve, in this price range we had…
Color – $999
Color Finesse HD – $1995
Magic Bullet Suite – $799
Speedgrade Onset – $749
3cP – $1499

Do you know why it has to be a BMD extreme 3 or 3d. My system is all but resolve ready except I have an extreme 2.
Has anyone done any testing with other BMD cards?
thanks

July 21, 2010 at 2:26 pmAs far as I know, DaVinci Resolve for Mac hasn’t been released yet, so no, no one else than BMD can answer that. I have the HD Extreme 2 myself, and will definitely get the HD Extreme 3D if that’s the missing link.

August 13, 2010 at 7:37 pmThis is all very exciting!
Lots of talk about the GTX285/480/Quadro 4800…
But what about the “other” GPU? You have mentioned the GT120 as required for the ‘other’ card, but will other cards work at all? I have a GTX 285, but also an 8800GT that came with my mac pro (was an optional upgrade). Right now only the 285 is installed, but will the older (but I think more powerful) 8800 compare or would I need a new “secondary” GPU?
