Resolution Independence and my golf swing videos…
Hi all, and thanks in advance for any help.
I come from a professional video editing background and I’m trying to do what I hope to be a straightforward job in the basic version of Vegas.
Here’s what I want to do:
Shoot high speed video on two compact cameras. The shots are of a golf swing from behind and from the side. Each camera produces 640×480 resolution at high speed and I want to drop those two shots into a 1920×1080 project.
One shot will be on the left, one on the right, and I want both at their native resolution within the HD picture area. (Leaving black space around of course).
When I did this for a living, my edit system was resolution independent and I could easily place the clips. (Mind you, that was a Discreet Smoke, not a $60 piece of software…)
However, in Vegas, it seems like my clips are being automatically resized to 1080px high therefore 1440px wide. I’m then having to shrink them which seems counter-intuitive.
So some insight into how to achieve this would be much appreciated.
I did do some searching but nothing really answered this question, though no doubt it has been asked before. For that I apologise but I need to demonstrate this fairly soon.

You simply set the Vegas project settings to exactly
the same as that of your video clips. And nothing will be
resized when you import them.
Open Project Properties and to the far right, you see an
icon that says match media settings, Click that, then
select one of the clips you are working with.Further read:

Thanks for your help other Steve, but I don’t want a project the same size as my media. I want an HD project that contains SD material at its native resolution.
I guess I’m not explaining it very well, or not understand what you’re suggesting.
What I’m after is a rendered output that looks like this:

Steve, I believe you want to use a project of 1920×1080 and put your two 640×480 clips on two separate tracks and then resize each of these tracks using “Track Motion”. You can turn off “Lock Aspect Ratio” and enter width=640 and height=480. But you need Vegas Pro, not sure if this will work in the “basic” version you mention.

Vegas always assumes that you want the input media resized to fit the project frame size, so 640×480 dropped into a 1920×1080 project gets scaled up to 853×480 for example.
You can shrink the 640×480 media back to original pixel size using Track Motion. Change the Height parameter to 480 (or whatever your media height is) and the width will reduce proportionally. You can then move the small video around in the output frame to suit.
Put each of your small media files on separate tracks and repeat the Track Motion for each to create your “video wall” style effect.

Yes, this works in Vegas Movie Studio Platinum (probably also the basic Movie Studio). I’m using VMS-Platinum 10.
