We are about to start a historical documentary. Most of the archive video is SD BetaCam and DV25. Some of the more current material is HDV 1080i. The new material will be shot in HD with a variety of cameras including F900, XDCam and some HDV.

We would like to edit in ProRes (HQ). My Question is… WOULD RESCALING THE ARCHIVE VIDEO IN FCP, COMPRESSOR OR AFTER EFFECTS GIVE US THE BEST QUALITY PRORES(HQ) IMAGE OF THE SD AND DV25 VIDEO?

    WE DON’T OWN SHAKE.

    Thanks Harvey

The best thing would be to dub using a Terranex at a post facility. Wait until you lock picture and can upscale only what you need.

Next best option is the AJA Kona 3 card:

Next would be Compressor…making sure to set your frame controls to BEST.

Then onto Instant HD by RedGiant Software. But with the caviat being that the footage that you upscale MUST be progressive…it won’t work with interlaced footage.

Instant HD 1.1 does support interlaced footage….I just used it yesterday and the results were FANTASTIC!
