Replication of an Effect from Star Trek Motion Picture
All,
I am looking for some suggestions to replicate the “probe” effect from Start Trek The Motion Picture, See clip below

I assume Particular would be a good choice, but If I did not have it, could I do this with Particle world? I ultimately want to use this as something like a light saber.
I am still only a beginner or intermediate After Effects users, so any help or more detailed steps to get me close would really be appreciated.

Looks like an AE Lightning effect, using an alpha channel drawn around the various equipment to make it follow the outline. The plasma tube could easily be done in Particular, and possibly even Particle World, using multiple instances of the effect. Here’s a tutorial:
