  • replacing audio issues!!!!!

I am having some trouble with the audio portion of a project I’m working on. First let me give you the basics of the project.

1 It is a feature shot on 35mm 3perf. All rolls are being processed and Telecined by a major post house here in LA.

    2. All rolls are getting a best light transfer and the telecined footage is being laid off to HDCAM tapes and then digitized in ProRez422 and I am receiving it in in individual QT clips.

    3. The sound was recorder on a Diva and is in 6 separate channels and was delivered in WAV files to the post house. All sound is being synced by the post house, however when they sync the original wav files for some reason there is only 2 tracks of audio instead of the 6 original tracks. I’m told that the syncing is being done by the colorist, at the time of Telecine.

    4. The problem I’m having is that when I go to deliver the OMF to the sound designer I need to have all 6 tracks/channels of audio in the OMF. I was looking for some way to have FCP do the work for me and just do a re-connect of media and swap the two channels of audio that are attached with the original QT’s with the 6 channel WAV files I thought this should be possible as long as the WAV files and the original audio files have corresponding names. I know FCP is not too great at reconnecting just audio, and because it stores the audio that’s attached to the video together in one file, when you go to do a re-connect of media it wants to replace the whole clip, audio and video.(which is a major complaint of mine about FCP)

    5. So I was wondering if anyone else has dealt with this issue? Any advice other than re-syncing by hand would be helpful.

A Few possible things I have thought of, but wanted some feedback on!!

Does soundtrack pro have a feature that can do this?
Is there any other features in FCP that I’m not aware of that can do this?
Would exporting an audio EDL and re-creating it using the original WAV files work?

    Michael,
FCP will not reconnect if the number of tracks change.

An export / import trough an EDL might work, but you need an EDL format that supports 6 audio tracks.

After that, have a look at my FCP reconnect app.
It probably won’t work for BWF, but my FCPauxTC reader comes with an helper app. that can paste your BWF into your QT’s (if the TC matches!)

Do toy with the demos, they will show you if you can get it to work on the entrire project.

    Hi Michael,
I know every production is different, but isn’t this usually the job of the dialog editor or assistant sound engineers?
For the last show I did that used a similar workflow, we handed off our audio edls and omfs and the sound people used Titan to autoconform the multitrack diva audio from the mono mixdown we used during picture editing.

Thanks to all who responded to this post. I will have to talk to the sound designers and see what can be done. The original sound designer told me that he would have to re-create the EDL by hand and it would take a week, but I believe that we are now using a larger sound house (universal i think) so they should be able to handle re-creating the six tracks from the diva based on the mono tracks we have been using to cut with.
