  • Replacing aliases and consolidating original media+events+project from 2 drives to one drive??

Posted by Jacob Brown on December 29, 2012 at 5:28 am

I am in the midst of editing a big project. Because of the way I shot things over 4 months, my original media is spread across two hard drives.

All the event folders on my MBP contain aliases to this media.

What is the best way to place all of the events, projects, and original media onto a new external hard drive?

(I just bought a big thunderbolt drive and would like to stop working off my two old firewire drives)

    Thank you!!!

Select the Events and use File > Move Events and choose your thunderbolt drive as the destination.

This will move the aliased events.

Then, on those Events on the thunderbolt drive, choose File > Organize Events and it will pull all media in to the Event.

This shoud take a little while depending on how much footage you have.

Then you can File > Move your Projects.

Ok yeah I was afraid this was the only answer.

There is no batch process way to do this is there?

I have 2.5 TB across 5 events. Would love to be able leave running over night instead of sitting an watching/monitoring it for a day….

    Thanks for the advice!

You can Move and Organize Events in a “batch” by selecting multiple Events.

This step will take the longest, especially “Organize”.

You don’t have to sit, just let it do it’s thing overnight. Moving 2.5TBs over fw800 is going to take some time.

The Project files you can also do via the Finder if you’d like, but FCPX has to be quit.

I’d suggest using FCPX though, as it will put things in the right place.

Projects have to be done one by one, but those shouldn’t take very much time so do them tomorrow after you move your Events.
