  • Replacement video card for GUI

Posted by Brian Mclaren on April 13, 2013 at 2:27 am

Running a 2008 Mac Pro with a GTX 285 for GPU and a GT 120 for GUI. The GT 120 died and I can’t find a replacement.

What would be a good replacement video card? Keep in mind that all my PCI power sockets are in use and that since I already have a good GPU, please don’t say “Just get a Quadro 600.”

    Thanks

If you run osx 10.8.3 you can take a GT 640.

    Well, you an “ok” GPU.
I would anyway ditch the GTX know and the new EVGA GTX 680 as the only card and be happy.

[Sascha Haber] “the new EVGA GTX 680”

I second Sascha’s recommendation. This card is a CUDA beast (1536 CUDA cores), and it only costs $600! This card is on my “to-purchase” list for sure.

By only card, you mean just have the 680 as GUI + Cuda?

Yes that is what he means, the boost is minimal in latest OS maybe 2-3% better so might as well just have the 680 and leave room for say a rocket rental or MiniSas storage etc.

If the Mac allows efi64 and Mountain Lion you should be golden.
My MacPro died and I have to use an old 1.1 right now with an ATI 5770 and Quadro4000 😉
    And Resolve 8.2.2…

don’t buy a GTX card ‘better’ than GTX285! GT120 & GTX 285 is the best combination for the MacPro 2008.
If your GT120 has died, buy a second hand GT120 for a few bucks.

Here you’ll find an explanation why it is wasted money to buy a better GPU: https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/364/1299

    Hi,

We have Davinci Resolve 9 running on a Mid 2012 MacPro – 2 x 2.66 GHz 6-Core, 10.8.2. We’ve got a Red Rocket card which has been laying around waiting for an expansion box.

    Currently setup is:

    slot-1 – GTX285 (GPU)
    slot-2 – GT120 (UI)
    slot-3 – LSI7404EP Fibre Channel
    slot-4 – DeckLink SDI

Am I to understand that in the mean time I could just take the GT120 and swap it for the RR? Would the GTX285 alone be ok for UI and GPU?

    Many thanks,
    Boris
